DOUBLE PLAY

PRACTICE ROUTINE

I once had an opportunity to sit in on a double play drill that Strongsville High School Head Coach, Josh Sorge, was providing instruction on. I later asked him, "How often does your team practice the double-play?" His answer was, "Everyday". Coach Sorge's team won the Ohio High School State Championship that following season.  - Coach Aten

Groundball to the

Short-stop

(see Video)

STEP #1 - Second baseman: Get to the Base as fast as you can. With the ball hit to the short-stop, the second baseman has to get to the base and set up a target. One of Coach Aten's biggest pet-peeves is coaches and players who practice meeting the ball at the bag in a timing like manner. Get there, get set, and give the shorts-stop a nice large target, while expecting a bad throw or flip.

STEP#2 - Set-up on bag with left foot on the base, body square to the target. Expect a poor throw, and be balanced to recover any toss.

Step #3 - Your right foot is going to go toward the ball. If the throw is perfect, you will step toward the throw, bringing yourself out of the base line for a nice clear path to throw. If the throw is wide-right, you will stride right, catching the ball in the middle of your body and leaving you beyond the bag for an un-obstructed throw. If the throw is wide-left, step out into the throw, taking you inside the base path for an un-obstructed throw.
