$$$$$$$$
Q:
How Much does it Cost
to Participate?
The BBAT Registration fee is
$200/annually. It cost the BBAT program between $530-$615/per
player to fund the program. We will fundraise the remainder of the
balance that Registration fees and Sponsors don't cover.
Q:
Is it true that Coach
Aten recorded 5 stolen bases while playing for the Oakland A's in a
Major League Game on July 29th, 1989?
Ummm, no, that would be Ricky
Henderson, but the two are often mistaken for one another...

Coach Aten

Ricky Henderson
... Ah-Yeah, we didn't see any
resemblance either.
(attempt at humor)
Q:
Umpires?
We are required to use
certified umpires. Our program contracts them from the Suburban
Umpire Association. Each community may use a different but similar
umpiring program. Umps are paid about $45/per game each and we use
two umpires per game ($90). In some leagues, each team is responsible for
paying (1) ump each game, in other formats the Home team pays both umps.

What You Need to Know
First of all, Welcome to the Berea
Braves 11U Travel Baseball Team.
Getting Started
Joining a new Travel Baseball Team can
be a frightening experience, especially if you don't know any of
your teammates yet. We have what is forming into a very receptive
family oriented Roster. Keep in mind that
in 2010 this is a brand new team so everyone is rather new.
TRYOUTS
This team originally held their
initial tryouts in August of 2009. At that time it was determined
that Berea had enough interest in fielding a team for this season.
However, most of the original 9 players who tried out, ate too much
candy during Halloween and exploded. It was a tragic loss, but the
four or so survivors were given new life when Coach Aten was hired
in October. The Team is still currently conducting try-outs in an
attempt to rebuild, so work hard each and every practice and stay
away from pop and candy.
OFF-SEASON
The off season is when we want to
fundraise, get it out of the way so that when the weather breaks in
the Spring we are ready to focus solely on baseball.
FUNDRAISING - The way we
conduct fundraising here in the Berea Baseball Association Travel
(BBAT) Program is to share with all (8)eight other Travel age
groups from 8U-to our new 15/16U Team. There are approx. 87
families in the program and 94 players. Each family is considered
as one. A family with more than one child in the program receives
the same amount of shares in ticket sales as a family with only
one child in the program. So go ahead and tell Mom that it is ok
to have more children.
-
Browns Season Ticket Raffle -
Last years teams ended by raffling off Browns Season Tickets.
Approximately 340 Tickets were raffled off at $10 per. First place
prize included a pair of 2009 Browns season tickets. Second place
won a pair of tickets to an October game and Third place winner
received pre-season tickets. After expenses, $2,290.00 was raised
for the program. Pretty easy fundraiser considering that 340
tickets sold/distributed between 87 families, required each family
to sell just (4) tickets. Players and Parents who are Steeler
fans had to sell double-quota and pay a higher registration fee as
well.
-
Night at the Races - The BBAT
Coaches meet regularly monthly throughout the entire year and they
came up with the trial of a Night at the Races fundraiser. The
event turned into a HUGE success, netting the program well over
$10k. Each family was required to sell only 4-6 event tickets at
$20/per. We also asked that they sell the naming rights to (1)
Horse at $20/per. In addition (40) Race and event Sponsors were
landed at the cost of between $25-$150/per advertiser. All in
attendance had a lot of fun and we plan to do this again next
fall. See
photos of event.
-
Pick-3 Lottery Ticket Fundraiser
- Each Team was given 125 three-digit lottery tickets to sell at
$5/per. If the 3-digit number matches that of the State's Pick-3
Evening/weekday drawing, the buyer wins $50 for each correct match
during the entire month of February. This quick, easy fundraiser
will net the program an additional $3,500. For winning numbers
-
BBA Reverse Raffle - This
event is a Berea icon as it has been held each and every year
since Mr. Berea's canoe banked here back in the 1800's (check your
history books though, we may have an error on this one). Anyway,
the BBA is our founding baseball superiors and manage the
recreational league here in Berea. Our Travel program pitches in
to help with planning and the selling of tickets to the event
and our 12U Cooperstown Team's parents volunteer to help work it
as a tradition and for some extra scratch to help fund their
special trip. This is one that adults won't want to miss, so get
your hands on a few tickets for yourselves and grab your friends
and neighbors to fill your table and you might be one of the lucky
ones who wins $1000, an HDTV or one of many other prize giveaways.
-
Steak Dinner Fundraiser -
This event isn't a big money maker for us, but one we've tried
over the years and the families all really enjoyed a nice night
out at Zach's Steakhouse on East Bagley Road and all for the
benefit of the program. For approx. $12 you and/or your guest will
receive a NY Strip Steak, potato, soup or salad, vegetable, and
roll. The players will pass time by selling 50/50 Raffle tickets
to be pulled periodically throughout the two-three night event.
-
Sponsors - Did you know that
this web site has one of the highest rankings among all the Travel
Baseball sites in the entire World? In most cases our sponsors can
benefit more by sponsoring our program and being featured on this
site than most of their other advertising can gain for them.
Throughout the year we will need sponsors and advertisers for our
printed-programs which are handed out at events such as the Night
at the Races Fundraiser. We will also feature our sponsors
throughout this web site and list them on flyers and Newsletters
and do just about anything else we can do to show appreciation for
their support. If you know of an individual or company that may be
interested in sponsoring, drop Coach Aten an e-mail. Sponsor commitments range from $25 and up.
When does the Season officially
Start?
In order to "officially" pick a date
that one season ends and another begins, is to actually have a
down period in which nothing is going on. Just kidding, under
Coach Aten a typical yearly Calendar would look something like
this:
August/September - Try-outs
are conducted on a couple of weekends and the team is selected for
the following year.
October/November - All BBAT
Head Coaches and Team representatives meet regularly once per
month throughout the entire year. Look for these Fall & Winter months
to be used for our big fundraisers that require a lot of time and
planning.
December - Parent Kick-off
Meeting, and begin to prepare for the coming season.
January/February/March -
Winter indoor Practices, League meetings.
April - Beginning about
the second week (or once the weather breaks) we will play a few
practice games and a preseason tournament. The regular season
begins around the 24th and we will attempt to get in a few games.
May - We will play approx. 10
games throughout.
June - We will play approx.
10 games throughout.
July - We will be off over
the Independence Holiday. Our Regular Season will end about the
13th of the month and we will participate in a Year-end tournament
the third week and be officially done for the season about the
20th.
If you ask a Head Coaches wife, the
season never ends ...
REGISTRATION COST & FORMS
Of course there are forms to
fill-out and registration procedures and cost. We will attempt to
provide access to all here.
BBAT Registration - We will
need a
BBAT
Registration Form filled out and submitted by each player.
BBAT Registration Fee - The BBAT Registration fee is
$200/annually. It cost the BBAT program between $530-$615/per
player to fund the program. We will fundraise the remainder of the
balance that Registration fees and Sponsors don't cover. Makes
checks payable to 'Berea Baseball Association Travel'
LEAGUE REGISTRATION -
Depending on which League we play in, they may require a Waiver be
signed by both player and parents. We will provide this form once
it is determined where we are playing (CVBA
or
Puritas League). All related costs are included in the BBAT
Registration fee.
BIRTH CERTIFICATE - We will
need a copy of all players birth certificate to have on-hand
during the season.
TEAM BUDGET
It cost nearly $5,000 to operate
each team in the BBAT (12yr old Cooperstown Team is considerably
more (x3) do to the Dreamspark Tournament). Here is an example of
a BBAT Team
typical budget.
WHERE WE PLAY
Our Home Field(s) will be at either
Lou Groza Park or Dora Lee Payne Field in Berea (see
Map to
Fields). Away game travel will be determined by the other teams
competing in the league. Opposing teams may vary from surrounding
communities to cities as far as Hudson to the Southeast,
Independence to the far East, Loarin to the far West and Medina to
the farthest South West. We will provide maps and directions to all
locations, once determined.
WHAT TIME ARE THE GAMES USUALLY
PLAYED?
Weekday games are typically at 6:00pm
through the first few months, and once the weather gets nicer and
school is out they may start at 6:30 with an occasional night game
at 8:00pm. On the weekends, they could range from
900am to 8:30pm.
UNIFORMS
Uniforms are also included within the
registration fee. Our uniforms are provided Luma Team Shop at 113
Front St. in Downtown Berea. The uniform consist of (2)Two Jersey
tops, one navy and one red, a pair of gray pants with red piping
down the leg, belt, socks, and a stretch-fit baseball cap with
players number embroiled on it.
COMMUNICATION
On each BBAT team the dialog chain may
be different, but with Coach Aten the first line of shared
information starts with this web site and our specific 11U Team
page(s), next is e-mail, then hand-outs, and finally at last resort
phone calls. To keep up with what is happening, we suggest at the
minimum you should be making it a habit to check the web site every
few days. Players may want to check it daily as we often use
write-ups, photo's and video to support and enhance what is coached.
