Berea High School baseball: Experienced Braves hope for big spring By Sun News staffMarch 25, 2010, 1:46PM
The fact that some of the members of this year’s Berea baseball team have more years of seniority with the team than the head coach stands to serve as an advantage for the new skipper. Chuck Salata is the new coach of the Braves. He served as the assistant coach at Berea last year. Before that, he spent 10 years coaching at St. Peter Chanel. Salata takes over the coaching job at Berea formerly held by Mike Draves.
Salata takes
over a program that is stocked with experienced players. He said only five
players from the 2009 team were lost due to senior graduation, resulting
in a team this season that is very familiar with the Division I Berea finished with a 10-4 record in the Southwest Conference last year. Coach Salata said he’s optimistic about the coming season due to the experience he sees up and down the roster. “I’m real happy with things this year,” he said. “We lost a lot of depth and power, but we’re going to be very talented with what we have now for at least the next three years. We have the defense and the offense to do what we want to do.”
The right-handed Miceli is one of the pitchers in the projected starting rotation, and will also see some time in the outfield. Bauer is one of the leading candidates for the first base slot. Another senior is Anthony Scafaria, and he is also slated to be one of the team’s outfielders. The candidate for the catching spot is Kirk Olesick. Even though he’s only a sophomore, Olesick started every game for the varsity last season, and finished the year with a batting average that topped the .300 mark. In the infield, Gabe Lopez and Chris Harrell are leading candidates to handle the starting duties at second base and shortstop, respectively. Other infielders are sophomore Joe Vasquez, junior Jacob Kohl and sophomore Bill Porter. Both Vasquez and Porter are also penciled in to see some playing time on the pitching staff. Two more outfielders on the team are juniors Anthony Hall and Rick Skoczen. Hall also can serve as a catcher. Two other pitchers for the Braves are juniors Josh Malone and Brandon Archer. Malone can also split his playing time as an outfielder. Some other new names on the Berea coaching staff include Tom Barnhart (varsity assistant), Ken Shaw (junior varsity coach) and Kyle Skoczen (junior varsity assistant). The Braves open the season Wednesday at Elyria Catholic. Then, on April 1, the team plays an afternoon contest at Midview.
The Braves
open their home schedule April 7 against Amherst Steele.
